Tuesday, February 24 2026, 4 - 5pm Park Hall, Room 265 An interdisciplinary team of researchers at UGA has been conducting research on the Rock Hawk and Rock Eagle effigy mounds in central Georgia. Both mounds are piled white quartz stones in the shape of birds. Photogrammetry, Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar), and drone technologies have provided new insights on these ancient Native American sites. In combination with twentieth-century archaeological documentation and literary references, a team of scholars, with sponsorship from INAS, will present a well-rounded disscussion of the effigy mounds. The team consists of Sergio Bernardes, Associate Director of UGA's Center for Geospatial Research, Archaeological Geology and Geophysics Professor Emeritus Ervan Garrison, INAS Faculty Affiliate and English Instructor Jim Wilson, and PhD Student and Wilson Center Graduate Fellow, Abhijit Sarmah have been working as a team for the past two years, conducting drone surveys and data-gathering expeditions to the Putnam County area around Eatonton Georgia where both effigy mounds are located. The group will present their most recent work on the histories and significance of Rock Eagle and Rock Hawk. For information on visiting these sites, vist https://visiteatonton.com/eatontons-effigies/
