Native American Theater: Writing the Body and Native Performance Methods Experiencing Native performance practices in theater through your body and mind. Sounds odd, I know, but this semester we will read plays by Native writers, and scholarship by Native performers and consider how indigenous knowledge informs the dramatic arts -- or not. I will take students through a series of embodied writing exercises that they can use as they write four ten-minute plays. (No previous playwriting courses are necessary for this course.) Throughout the semester we will focus on Native performance[s], as a method of recovery of Indigenous knowledge and test how it informs our own playwriting processes. This course advances, develops and extends a greater understanding of indigenous knowledge on three fronts by introducing students to theory, process, and practice.
