Welcome INAS is housed in the “Yellow House” or Casa Amarilla The Institute of Native American Studies at the University of Georgia was founded in 2004. Today, we are a vibrant community of two dozen scholars, including six Native faculty, in addition to our graduate and undergraduate students. Institutes at UGA, just like departments, have three functions: teaching, programming and research. Central to our mission are our undergraduate and graduate certificates in Native American Studies. When we were designing our programs, we decided to go with certificates rather than majors or degrees because we felt it gave our students greater flexibility. By getting a degree in a “traditional discipline” and a separate credential demonstrating their expertise in Native American Studies, undergraduates can go on to graduate studies in either their core discipline or in Native American Studies. Graduate students can seek jobs in their core discipline or in Native American Studies. Certificates INAS offers both an undergraduate and a graduate certificate in Native American Studies. In addition, it has four specialized tracks in historic preservation, landscape architecture, public health, and Indigenous Latin America. UGA also has outstanding programs in law, environmental design, ecology, and forestry & natural resources, among many other areas of interest to Native students and scholars of Native America. Learn More Experiential Learning INAS provides many opportunities for experiential learning through a Maymester field course and Summer Field Schools, offered through the Anthropology School. Learn More Scholarships and FUNDING The INAS offers a variety of scholarship and grant opportunities to tribally enrolled Native American Students and any student pursuing the Certificate in Native Studies at the University of Georgia. Opportunities are given on a rolling admission, so contact the INAS to see what scholarships and grants are open as well as the qualifications and formal application procedures.
