INAS Graduate Student Receives Newberry AMS fellowship.

James A Owen, a PhD candidate in history who completed the INAS certificate in 2015, has received the prestigious Newberry Library American Musicological Society fellowship.  James' research proposal was selected from a pool of over 200 graduate student projects from across the country. He will be in residence at the Newberry library in Chicago for May and June of 2018. His dissertation research focuses on the translation and singing of Christian hymns in mixed ethnicity indigenous communities of the US South and Caribbean between 1738 and 1838.  James' dissertation committee includes Dr. Jace Weaver and Dr. Claudio Saunt.
