The Department of American Indian Studies (AIS) at UNC Pembroke is pleased to announce the Call for Proposals and applications for student travel grants for the 21st annual Southeast Native Studies Conference (SNSC), to be held March 19–20, 2026.

Since 2005, the Southeast Native Studies Conference has been the only national gathering dedicated solely to the unique histories and cultures of Southeastern Native Americans.

Call for Proposals
We welcome proposals for papers, panels, poster presentations, and creative works exploring the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of Native Americans in the Southeastern United States. Submissions may focus on academic research or creative expression in areas such as archaeology, education, history, socio-cultural issues, religion, literature, oral traditions, art, identity, sovereignty, health, and beyond. Creative works may include written, visual, musical, video, digital, or other media connected to the lives and concerns of Indigenous Southeastern peoples. Proposals are encouraged from scholars, community members, students, and all who engage with these important conversations. Only complete proposals will be considered, and each individual may submit only one proposal.

Student Travel Grants
AIS will also offer student travel grants of up to $1,000 to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. These funds may be used for registration, travel expenses, lodging (3 days, 2 nights), and per diem to help students share their work at the conference.

Deadline
The deadline to submit proposals and travel grant applications is Friday, December 5, 2025, and notifications of acceptance will be sent on Monday, December 15, 2025. Proposals can be submitted through the link below.
