Studies in the Novel after 1900: Indians in Space: Native Transfigurations of the American Novel Native scholar Jodi Byrd argues that “American Indian authors, test the limits of genre’s laws and transgress the boundaries of taxonomy, they produce texts that might be understood as transgenres, texts that experiment, refuse categorization, and that genre-bend narrative fiction into poetry, traditional stories into science fiction, fantasy into the historical, and horror into the epistolary.” (346-347) In this course we will read novels through the lens of transgenres in order to consider the permeable borders, crossings, and methods of resistance American Indian and Indigenous authors employ in order to intervene in the dominate colonial imaginings about tribal peoples.
