The Dutch-Portuguese war of 1645 divided the Potiguara people in Brazil. Potiguara leaders corresponded across the battle lines, providing an indigenous perspective of colonialism. But the Potiguara's ancient Tupi language has remained an enigma until recent translations were completed.

Sequoyah is a legendary Cherokee who created the Cherokee language syllabary. The new documentary Searching for Sequoyah - premiering on PBS stations across the US this month, traces his mysterious history.
